Hair transplants, procedures and cosmetic support

A transplant moves follicles to rebuild coverage. A scalp procedure aims to influence growth from follicles already present. A wig or hairpiece can improve appearance immediately. Each has a different place in a hair-loss plan.
Suitability starts with the condition causing the loss, the hair available and the result being sought. Those findings establish what needs attention before a procedure.
Plan for the hair that remains
Transplant assessment includes the donor supply, the area to cover and likely future loss. The surrounding hair may also need ongoing treatment for the condition causing loss.
Women seeking frontal hairline restoration need careful assessment of the cause of recession. Scarring alopecia changes eligibility and long-term expectations. A multicenter review of transplants in frontal fibrosing alopecia illustrates the need for disease-specific planning.1
A period of stability alone cannot promise lasting graft survival. The surgeon needs to assess the disease history alongside the proposed operation.
Technique changes the experience
Some surgeons offer long-hair or unshaven follicular unit excision, often called FUE. Published work describes selected uses, including hairline and eyebrow restoration.2
Keeping hair long can affect how visible the procedure is during recovery. Eligibility still depends on the underlying condition, donor quality and surgical assessment.
A transplant plan needs to account for the hair moved and the hair left around it.
Distinguish the scalp procedures
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, uses a preparation from the person's blood. Microneedling creates small skin punctures. Dutasteride mesotherapy injects a drug into the scalp.
Studies have reported growth benefits from PRP and microneedling added to minoxidil in pattern hair loss. Preparation, schedule and comparator matter when interpreting those results.3,4
Published work on injected dutasteride includes small studies.5 The drug, formulation, route and procedure each need assessment. A short study reporting no adverse events leaves larger and longer-term safety questions open.
Give cosmetic support skilled attention
Wigs and toppers are useful prosthetic options. Fit, comfort, ventilation, cleaning and attachment matter, particularly with a sensitive scalp. The scalp should remain accessible for care and review. Pain or pulling needs correction. Repeated tension can cause hair loss.6
Scalp tattooing and eyebrow microblading create the appearance of hair with pigment. They require specialized expertise. The FDA describes risks including infection, allergic reactions and pigment changes.7 A changing hairline or eyebrow deserves assessment before permanent camouflage.
Choose the option around the goal
Bring the proposed procedure and the result you hope to achieve. The recommendation should identify what needs treating first and where procedural or surgical assessment fits. The practitioner performing the procedure then establishes suitability, risks and aftercare.
